The Hackathon for Active & Healthy Ageing (HAHA) is an international contest that takes place in Amsterdam from 18 to 22 November during the larger Robots at your service conference. It is a senior-centric, 48-hour rapid innovation event where multidisciplinary talents collaborate on the design and development of ro)bot solutions that allow older adults to live a healthier, more active and independent life.
In a continuous effort to support innovation in the field of active and healthy ageing, the AAL Programme, together with ZonMw, sponsors this event and will award the winning team with a cash prize as well as a support to strengthen the commercialisation and market viability of the proposed solution.

The challenge and the criteria
The European Commission has identified active and healthy ageing as a major societal challenge common to all European countries, and an area which presents considerable potential for Europe to lead the world in providing innovative responses to this challenge. According to the 2015 Ageing Report from the European Commission, the number of Europeans over 65 will double in the next 50 years, and the number of over-80-year olds will almost triple. While the costs for professional care are on the rise, the dependency ratio will increase over the next decades. Needless to say, caring for those seniors – physically, emotionally and mentally – will be of paramount importance in order to tackle future society issues and exploit revenues deriving from the silver economy.
Purpose of the Hackathon
The purpose of the event is to address the challenges that arise from the growing ageing population through the use of Internet of Things (IoT), Robotics & Artificial Intelligence (AI). To create (ro)bot solutions that prolong independent living and improve the care for older adults at home.
