Workshop provides deep understanding of AAL solutions
Delegates gather in Bolzano, Italy, to discuss the challenges in implementing and managing AAL solutions for active ageing
On May 7th, 2024, EURAC Research in Bolzano hosted a workshop titled “Technical Integration of AAL Solutions in Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities.” The event was conducted in German and attracted a diverse group of 34 participants, including 19 individuals from care organisations, six representatives from research, six providers of technical services and products, and three from public administrations. These participants came from South Tyrol (18), Austria (12), Germany (3), and Switzerland (1).
The workshop was collaboratively designed and organised by the EURAC Research team and expert Peter Kulmbrein. Participants delved into the intricacies of planning, implementing, and managing AAL solutions for active ageing, addressing a spectrum of challenges including structural, technical, organisational, legal, and ethical aspects from the residents’ perspective.
Key discussions centred on strategies to support care staff and residents in adopting technological solutions, emphasising practical approaches to overcome barriers. Specific technologies discussed included nurse call systems, telecommunication systems, alarm servers, and various sensor technologies for fall detection, incontinence monitoring, and environmental sensing. Trends identified pointed towards the use of wireless, cloud-based systems, and mobile technologies to enhance communication and safety in care environments.
The workshop also addressed the importance of standardisation at both European and national levels to ensure interoperability and compliance with relevant regulations. Best practices for successful implementation were shared, emphasising user-friendly designs and seamless integration into existing care workflows. The overarching goal of integrating digital assistance technologies is to enhance the efficiency and quality of care in senior living and care facilities through advanced tech solutions.
An essential aspect of the workshop was understanding participant expectations at the outset, allowing Peter Kulmbrein to tailor the discussion to focus on specific sub-areas in detail. This approach facilitated a rich exchange of experiences and knowledge among participants.
The workshop provided valuable insights and practical strategies for leveraging advanced technologies to improve care quality and efficiency. By addressing key challenges and sharing best practices, the event contributed to the ongoing effort to enhance senior care through innovative tech solutions.
